What is ETFE?
Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene, ETFE, is a kind of new generation plastic having high chemical resistance and mechanical strength over a very wide temperature range. It is a very molecularly stable material. The strong bonds that exist between the fluoroplymer molecules avoids the degradation of the material due to atmospheric conditions, substances deposited on the material or ultraviolet radiation.

Having 25-30 years of durability, color stability and resistance against becoming brittle, ETFE, with its unparalled alternative to traditional materials, is used successfully for heat insulation and sun control at the façades and roofs.

Advantages of ETFE

Altinoran Mall ETFE Roof
Shopping Mall

This project was completed in January 2017. It consists of total 2-layer 12 cushions. The design resembles a seashell which covers Altinoran Shopping Mall in Ankara, Turkey. Project includes design, structural calculation, fabrication and installation of steel structure and ETFE cushions.

Beyazit Library ETFE Roof
Recreation

This project has a huge single 2-layer square ETFE cushion divided into 4 areas by tensioned surface cables and installed in 2015. It covers the atrium of historical Beyazit State library in Istanbul. The steel structure for the partitioning the cushion is supported by a flying mast underneath.

Baku Olympic Stadium
Sport

ETFE cushions on the façade of Baku Olympic Stadium are illuminated by colorful LED fittings which have been installed by our team consisting of 60 rope access climbers. Our scope of the project was completed in 2014. The spectacular Olympic Stadium was opened in 2015 for the European Games.

Comparison of ETFE with Glass
Both systems provide some capabilities like thermal insulation or light translucency. However, ETFE foil cushions offer some benefits over glass.

Structural Characteristics:
ETFE is a very flexible material and is able to cope with large deformations before breakage. Elongations of 200-300% are possible. As being prestressed, it can accomodate the live loads. Glass, on the other hand, is very brittle and works as a plate. As a result, it is subjected to bending moments. ETFE is on the other hand is mainly subjected to tensile stress. The outer layer of an ETFE cushion is the most stressed layer where inner layer is the less stressed one. Middle layer takes almost no load, so basically it is used to created two compartments in the cushion.

The dimensions of a single panel is a major difference between glass and ETFE. ETFE can literally be quite long whereas glass panels are rather limited in size.

Advantages of ETFE Foil

Advantages of ETFE Foil:
Very strong and tear resistant
Good translucency and light transmission in visible and UV ranges
B1 class fire resistance. Excellent characteristics for fire emergency situations.
No mechanical or visible aging under stress
Abrasion resistant
100% recyclable
Lightweight
Low coefficient of friction
Printed color patterns possible. This helps in control of heat and light trasmission.
Doesn't react with other substances. Excellent resistance to solvents and chemicals.
Small defects are easy to repair
More than 20 years of life
Hail resistant in cushion applications
High degree UV transmittance
Foil doesn't become brittle over time
Non stick characteristics makes it virtually self-cleaning with little need for maintenance
Wide service temperature range (-200 to +150C)
Very low gas and water permeability
Very low water absorption
Excellent thermal control through multi-layer foils.
Exceptionally high resistance to tearing
Linear elastic behavior up to 20MPa
